1971 sold to present owner.

OVERVIEW: Up for bid is a 1969 deTomaso Mangusta, which has the factory installed 302cid engine, ZF 5-Speed Transaxle, OEM Campy wheels and other rare factory components. This Mangusta was been kept in storage by the previous owner for the past 18 years, and has been out of the mainstream public eye the entire time. The previous owner purchased this car from a car lot around 1971 or so. There are a lot of interesting vintage Shelby parts as well as a professionally modified front trunk lid; see “URBAN LEGEND” notes below. Following a recent “rescue” of this car, all major systems have just been reviewed and mechanically / electrically reworked in order to bring the car back to a running and driving project. This Mangusta was originally the extremely rare Apple Green color, which has been verified. The car has been cleaned, engine bay de-greased, and all major areas of concern either addressed or identified.
ENGINE: Ford 302 Windsor, Ford 351 big valve iron heads. Holley 4 Barrel (dual line, double pumper, mechanical secondaries). Accel Super Coil. Vintage Shelby intake manifold and valve covers. Custom vintage headers, vintage aftermarket big bore mufflers. Fresh oil, filter, plugs and wires. Original jackshaft assembly to power alternator and a/c compressor.
TRANSAXLE: ZF 5-Speed. All forward gears operate correctly. Linkage cleaned and adjusted. Can’t find reverse yet, may be linkage related.
SUSPENSION: Rear shocks and springs were upgraded in the 1970’s. Original adjustable heim joint / can-am configuration.
EXTERIOR: The original Apple Green paint was thought to have been recoated in Black just after the car was new. The paint was again re-sprayed Black later in the 1970’s. The paint looks fair from a short distance, but upon closer inspection very small paint bubbling, small dents, road rash and some panel fitment become visible. The body has areas requiring repair as follows: Behind the passenger door / in front of the rear wheel lower body (Outer shell rust). Rear apron on driver’s side, left of the muffler (Previous repair and rust). The battery tray (rust), and the lower portion of the passenger door (Bubbling & fitment). The bottom of the floorpan shows some previous evidence of repair, but appears solid. These are all common areas for repair with unrestored Mangusta cars.
BRAKING: Original Girling 4-wheel disc brakes. Car stops, no caliper leaks. Although operational, should be carefully reviewed before driving!
INTERIOR: Original Black leather interior. Top of dash was recovered in the 1970’s and looks great. Seats clearly need to be recovered. Door panels and dash are very good, console is so-so. Carpet was replaced years ago, and should be again. Interior floor appears solid, with minor surface rust visible. All original Veglia gauges present, except clock, which is missing. Under dash A/C unit with vents is missing.

URBAN LEGEND: There is an urban legend associated with this Mangusta, which could explain the trunklid, etc. According to the previous owner, this car was modified from day one by Carroll Shelby Enterprises in El Segundo, Ca., where the engine, trans, hood and paint were all reworked. There is no written proof of this, however. I have not tried to reach Shelby, Inc. to verify any possible connection, so for now this is only an urban legend.
FACT: Carroll Shelby really did work with deTomaso, reportedly due to the need for a closed coupe to replace the Shelby Cobra. According to somewhat little known history, the Mangusta was to become a Ford / Shelby project (The Shelby MK IV), although the idea was soon scrapped in favor of the Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe, one of which recently sold via Mecum auction for $7m.
VALUE?: This car is a restorable project, and has been saved from a certain death. Mangusta cars which have been fully restored to exceptional concours’ condition have sold between $75k-$120k in the past 12 months. The market is expected to remain stable, as the supply of restorable cars is limited to the remaining 200 of the original 401 cars produced from 1967-1971.
