The Saga Lancia 037 Vin number 412

It’s highly unusual for two cars to have the same Vin number. However, if there is a saga involving two Lancia 037 rally cars with the same Vin number, it would indeed be a peculiar and controversial situation.

In 1987, the Lancia 037 with Vin number “412” suffered of a devastating crash during the Rally di Torino. The car was declared unrecoverable, and its remains were (supposedly) retained by the rally team Volta.

In 1990, a Lancia 037 with Vin number “412” emerged in France, fully restored and purchased by Mr. Hommel, editor of a French automobile magazine.

Conflict Arises:
In 2005, yet another Lancia 037 with Vin number “412” resurfaced in the United Kingdom.

Controversy Deepens:
Both cars were presented at separate auctions—one by Artcurial in 2021 and the other by Bonhams in 2023.

Artcurial acknowledged the uncertainty regarding the car’s identity, while Bonhams failed to mention the conflicting history.

Conclusion:
Collectors must determine if the auction houses were incompetent or dishonest based on their actions.
The outcome of the saga remained unresolved over the authenticity of the two cars, or you decide that both cars are fakes, it’s a easy conclusion that I disagree with !
